Her Melbourne Festival 2015 show at The Forum last night opened with a lengthy medley of songs from her 2013 album Once I Was An Eagle, before Marling delivered an intense performance that showcased her entire body of work. I was a huge fan of the stuff that she used to do with Broken Social Scene. While private and soft-spoken, Laura is jovial, self assured and a real pleasure to meet in person. Not only does this add layers to her shows, but it also makes it clear to her audience and her fans that she is limited to neither option. As the crew lock in camera angles and complete the usual sound checks, Laura begins to treat us to a medley of two songs from this latest release, in a setting often lyrically fitting. Being hospitable tour guides, we met Laura at the Forum stage door; just a short walk through the lane way to our shoot location. It featured a little more maturity than the prior release. She has such a lovely voice, but we left when the second number came on because the back up instruments and her seeming to scream into the microphone made for a painfully deafening experience. Marling will do a single performance at The Forum before heading to Sydney for a special appearance at the Opera House as part of. Although some of her work is adorned with careful and beautiful instrumentation, Marling was only backed by a bass player and drummer. The older I get, the more I play the guitar. Laura Marling is a seasoned performer and graces the stage with quiet confidence. Since releasing two Mercury Prize nominated albums, her third takes up a independent writing phase, following a more collaborative past.
